History of Propriano
In the 2nd millennium BC, the ancient port city of Pauca was located on the site of today’s Propriano. During construction work in the Quatrina district in the summer of 2009, 65 graves from antiquity were discovered and excavated. In the Middle Ages, first Pisa and then Genoa dominated the island and thus also the Gulf of Valinco. Due to the malaria contamination of the coastal area, the town never grew into a real town and eked out a modest existence as a fishing and port town for the villages in the hinterland. There are no remains of any Genoese fortification walls left.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the small trading port was massively expanded, which suddenly caused Propriano to grow rapidly. The next growth spurt followed around 50 years later with the development of modern tourism. The beaches in the region were popular with travelers from the mainland from an early stage. The traffic flow through the town takes a little getting used to. Otherwise, Propriano offers everything you need for a vacation.

Festivals
Festival of Saint Erasmus (Saint Érasme) in Propriano
The festival takes place on the first weekend of June each year. In 2023, it was held on June 1st and 2nd. This is a traditional festival celebrating Saint Erasmus, who is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. This festival is an important cultural and religious event for the local community, especially those connected to maritime activities.
A special mass is held to celebrate Saint Erasmus. In 2023, it took place on Sunday, June 2nd at 6:30 PM on the Quai Saint Érasme of the marina and fishing port of Propriano. Following the mass, there is a traditional procession at sea in the Gulf of Valinco. Before it, on Saturday evening (June 1st in 2023), there was a Corsican singing concert at the marina.
Saint Erasmus
Erasmus of Formia, also known as Saint Elmo (died c. 303), was a Christian martyr and saint. He is honored as the patron saint of sailors and those suffering from abdominal pain. Additionally, Erasmus, or Elmo, is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints revered in Christian tradition for their role as intercessors.
Erasmus is believed to have become the patron saint of sailors due to a legend in which he continued preaching undeterred after a lightning bolt struck near him. Sailors, often threatened by sudden storms and lightning, sought his protection through prayer. As a result, the glowing electrical discharges seen at the mastheads of ships during storms were interpreted as a sign of his guardianship and became known as “Saint Elmo’s Fire.”
