TGV Trains in France
TGV trains can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h (199 mph), making them one of the fastest trains in Europe. They connect over 200 destinations in France and several international cities in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.
Major domestic routes include Paris to Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Strasbourg, and more. International routes connect Paris with cities like Brussels, Frankfurt, Milan, and Barcelona.
There are two main types of TGV services:
- TGV INOUI: Offers higher comfort levels, including free Wi-Fi, power outlets, ergonomic seats, and more space, especially in first class.

Ticket Fares in TGV Trains
Fares can vary a lot depending on current promotions and time before travel. It is recommended to book in advance and follow promotion letters from SNCF. The price difference can be up to 80%! You can find tickets for just 20 € while the regular price can be around 120 €. Tickets for TGV trains are available 90 days in advance. So check them at the first opportunity as a number of tickets at reduced price is very limited.
Onboard Facilities in TGV Trains
TGV trains are known for their comfortable seating, with both first (1 +2 seats per row) and second-class (2 + 2 seats per row) options. First-class offers larger, adjustable seats with fold-down tables and power sockets. Also 2nd class carriages offers often power socket and tables, it depends more on the train itself.
Onboard services typically include air conditioning, bar or restaurant cars, power sockets, Wi-Fi (on most routes), and facilities for disabled passengers. Some trains also have children’s play areas and newspapers/magazines.
All TGVs are completely non-smoking. They all feature one or more wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets in both classes.

Luggage Limits (as of February 2024) for TGV InOui: Luggage size is limited by what you can carry on by yourself. One hand luggage plus two suitcases, or one hand luggage, one suitcase, and one specific item (e.g., musical instrument, pushchair, bike in cover). Specific item limits: up to 130 cm x 90 cm. If limits are exceeded, a €50 fee applies. Bikes, musical instruments, snowboards, and skis must be in a labeled cover. You can bring a pair of skis without any size restrictions, with one pair allowed per person.
Food and Drink: You can bring your own food and drink onboard. Some routes offer pre-order meal services to avoid queues in the bar carriage.
Check-in: There is no formal check-in process for domestic TGV services. For international routes, ticket inspections and passport checks occur onboard.
