Château du Ribeauvillé or château Bas des Ribeaupierre

Château du Ribeauvillé or château Bas des Ribeaupierre may not be sensational, but it has an interesting history. The Ribeaupierre family built it and moved in during the 15th century after leaving the Saint-Ulrich castle. It had three floors and two towers, and they created terraced gardens spanning over one hectare.

After the family’s death, their successors continued to maintain the estate, but no longer lived there.

During the Revolution, the castle was seized, its furniture and most of the materials were looted. It was then used as a prison and later as a hospice. Soon after, it came into private ownership, and parts of it were demolished, including the top floor of the building.

In 1890, the town of Ribeauvillé restored it and established a school there, starting with the Ribeaupierre Middle School.

 

Garden of Château du Ribeauvillé

One of the pleasure gardens created by Eberhard de Ribeaupierre between 1619 and 1639 stretches across the slopes to the northwest of the town, at the foot of the “Château Bas” wall. The orange groves that made it famous have vanished, but its Italian-style terraces, connected by stone staircases, are still adorned with ponds, statues, and remarkable trees. It is now owned by the hospital and is cared for by its gardener.
