Public transport in and around Colmar
It is necessary to distinguish between three types of buses that operate in Colmar and the surrounding area:
- City buses and the closest suburb of Colmar – (TRACE network) – ticket 1.50 € for 1 hour
- Buses throughout the Colmar agglomeration (that is, to neighboring villages, including the most tourist ones) – Fluo Grand Est network (for department 68) – ticket 4 € for 4 hours
- Tourist panoramic bus KUT’ZIG (hop-on / hop-off) – only in high season – ticket 29 € per day.
In short, 1 ticket price for 1 adult:
- ticket for Colmar city and surroundlings: 1.40 €,
- ticket for the Colmar agglomeration (that is, Colmar itself and those villages in the surrounding area): 4 €,
- ticket for the Haut-Rhin department for 24 hours: 23.10 €,
- ticket for the whole Alsace : 37.40 €.
If you plan to see the historical center of Colmar, then you don’t even have to use city buses.
Almost all buses stop at Colmar station.
Buses from Colmar to neighboring villages (Route des Vins d’Alsace)
Buses operated by Fluo Grand Est depart from Colmar Station with only one other stop within the city. So it is better to depart from the Gare de Colmar.
When leaving the station you can find many bus stops on the left and right, each serving 1 – 2 buses in different directions. You can find your way around using the information on a board near the stop. Check bus route numbers and the final destination written on a board. Allow some time to walk from stop to stop to find your bus.
The bus towards Riquewihr and Ribeauville depart from the last stop to the right of the exit.
The tourist panoramic bus stops at a stop almost opposite the exit, but across the road.
Travelling with kids in and around Colmar
If you are traveling with toddlers, it is important to remember that buses in the city of Colmar are low-floor. But buses to neighboring villages are ordinary intercity high-floor buses. So you will have to fold the stroller and put it in the luggage compartment every time.
This is not very convenient, since you have to take everything out of the stroller every time, but there is no other option.
Unfortunately, regional trains in Alsace are also usually high-floor (with some exceptions). So you will have to struggle a lot with the stroller.
Frequency of buses
Buses run quite frequently in the city of Colmar, though it depends on the route. Depending on the time of day, the bus frequency is every 10, 20, 30 or 60 minutes.
But buses from Colmar to neighboring villages can run from relatively often (once every 2 hours) to very rarely (2 buses a day), or not at all (even in high season there is not a single bus to Eguisheim on Sundays!). Therefore, be sure to find out the exact schedule in advance and arrive at the stop at least 10 – 15 minutes earlier so as not to miss your bus. There are no notice boards about the bus arrival time. Not even at all stops you can find a bus schedule!
In spring – summer season an option can be to take a panoramic tourist bus which goes also on Sunday every 1.5 hour, but is pretty costy.
